Battle Axe
Battle Axe was a demanding piece. After sanding through layers of gesso and reaching the point where he felt ready, he wouldn’t let me go. He kept me up at night, pulling me back in again and again. I found myself obsessively writing—pouring stream of consciousness journaling onto the surface in the early hours of the morning while my daughter slept tight in bed.
Using pencils of varying hardness, the textures and layers began to take on a life of their own. He kept asking for more—more sanding, more shapes, always more writing—constantly pretending to be finished, only to demand another round.
His name came to me abruptly, mid-creation—sharp and unignorable, just like him. Battle Axe explores the ghosts of past relationships, the secrets we carry, and the unconscious patterns we inherit. Some truths we know; others crash through, uninvited, demanding to be seen.
